Mapping The Mobile Network

Network Design, Planning & Optimisation

Tools to automate network design, planning and optimisation are becoming increasingly important for several reasons: the growing importance of providing in-building wireless coverage, plans for small cells in differing environments, the perceived requirement to design the network as a competitive differentiator, cost and efficiency pressures on operational teams.

Network planning software needs to be multi-service and multi-mode aware, taking account of 2G, 3G and LTE overlays. Crucially, as operators consider dense urban or indoor deployments, there is a new requirement for tools that can map and plan RF networks that create optimum capacity and coverage with minimum interference.

Optimisation software is also becoming more of a strategic asset within the network, moving from being something that was purely used by network operations engineers to tweak a network, into providing network data and feeds into operators’ CEM platforms and processes. The aim is to build a network that is aware of where users are, what they are trying to do, and how the network can best meet that need.
