Satellite Backhaul
Satellite is used for backhaul only when no other options are available. Uses include remote or rural areas, offshore or maritime applications, or in emergency or disaster situations.
Often the payload to be transmitted over the backhaul link is heavily optimised and compressed so as to reduce required bandwidths as much as possible. Traffic that is “local”, ie from and to two users within the local area of coverage, does not need to be carried over the backhaul link. There does need to be a signalling link to the core for charging, billing, etc.
